As with many things in life, I feel like I’m of two minds when it comes to routine. On some levels, I crave it. Having a routine helps me to feel like I’ve got my life together (Even when I don’t. Actually, especially when I don’t. Routine creates an illusion of having it all together, and I like that). I guess I just like knowing what to expect, y’know?
But I also love spontaneity. Falling into a rut is just the worst and sticking too obsessively to any routine is a pretty sure-fire way for that to happen. Just the idea of picking up and dashing off on an unexpected adventure, big or small, makes me happy, even if actually going through with it sometimes requires a bit more prodding than I’d like to admit.
Yesterday was Monday and it was hot. It was hot in the days before and it’s going to stay hot for a while but there’s something especially unforgiving about a hot Monday. To offer some reprieve my friend, Alex, invited us out to his family’s cottage after work for a swim.
I almost didn’t go. I mean, I wanted to, but I was also thrown off because it was a Monday and who takes off to a cottage for a few hours on a Monday evening?
But thankfully we decided to say “SCREW YOU, MONDAY! ROUTINE ISN’T THE BOSS OF ME!” and we made the short trip out for an evening of boating, swimming and enjoying dinner out in the shade. It was unexpected but it was also kind of liberating – a completely refreshing way to spend an evening and be spontaneous.
Looking for a nice change of pace and a way to get some new perspective? Shake up your routine, even just a little bit. Do something unexpected and see what happens!
What about you? Are you a stickler for routine or do you like to fly by the seat of your pants? When was the last time you bunked your routine and did something out of your ordinary?
