I don’t normally enter contests, but when I do I get completely and utterly emotionally invested in the process.
This past weekend Candice – my bestie and partner in crime over at The Let’s Go Ladies! – and I entered a contest which, if we win, will see us both being sent to Jasper National Park next month to be the Star Social Media Correspondents for the Jasper Dark Sky Festival!
My favourite place on Earth + billions of stars + social media + my BFF = BEST. PRIZE. EVER.
In 2011, Jasper National Park was awarded the designation of the World’s Largest Dark Sky Preserve. To celebrate the honour they’re throwing a party in appreciation of their beautifully unspoiled natural night sky! If you’re looking up at a true dark sky that means you’re lucky enough to be seeing a star-filled night sky that is free of light pollution.
The Dark Sky Festival aims to help raise awareness for the importance of preserving natural night skies and the noctural environments that depend on them. There will be all kinds of events and speakers (like Jay Ingram who used to host Daily Planet! I LOVE DAILY PLANET!) not to mention that we will actually be able to see REAL DARK SKY! If you’ve never seen dark sky before you’ll just have to trust me: It’s incredible.
I’ll never forget my first trip to Jasper National Park. My family lived just outside of Edmonton at the time and my mom had always told us how amazing the Rocky Mountains are. It was one of those precious times when the real thing turned out to be even better than all the hype. I’m fairly certain that experience was the first time anything ever took my breath away.
Jasper left a mark on me and has heavily influenced who I grew up to be. I can trace my love of the Canadian wilderness back to that first trip. I still dream about the view around the Park and think about going back all of the time. I felt as though that first experience woke my wild spirit. I love the place so much that, when I met my then-puppy companion over five years ago, I felt that same connection and named him appropriately: Athabasca Dreamer, aka Jasper.
Winning this contest would mean everything to me. Getting to finally go back and use something I’m passionate about to share Jasper’s natural beauty with the world would be a dream come true!
