Kyle and I had a relationship birthday last weekend. Because the months between November and February seem to celebration/holiday-heavy months for us (one birthday, Christmas, anniversary, Valentine’s) we had both agreed that we would forego gift-giving for this one and opt instead to just spend the day enjoying our time together.
It didn’t really work out that way though. A fancy dinner out on the town aside, I still wanted to do something special to commemorate the day. I had a stroke of inspiration a few weeks ago, so when Saturday rolled around I just had to get to work (and cross my fingers that I didn’t screw anything up).
Back story: most couples I know have those things that are distinctly theirs; jokes, songs, traditions, etc. High up on our list of “us” things is the movie, “The Secret Life of Walter Mitty” (the Ben Still version, not the original and very different Danny Kane film). It’s just one of those things that means a lot to us both for a whole bunch of different reasons.
I suppose there’s a relationship analogy to be drawn there, but I actually hadn’t stopped to consider it before. I just thought it would be cute to bake the cake from one of our favourite movies.
I used this recipe from Cathy Merenda (who, it turns out, actually works at the studio that made the film, so I think this is about as legit as it gets). I may not be much of a chef but I do really enjoy the process of baking so this was a fun project.
Thankfully for everyone involved, this was an easy recipe to follow. Even with my limited kitchen skills I was able to finish off a really nice cake with relative ease.
The finished product: a tasty, moist, dense cake AND a thoughtful romantic gesture. Oh, and a Twitter favourite from Ben Stiller himself? Don’t mind if we do!
